Day 22 | Australia Updates

Australia Updates

I feel like I have been talking about Australia forever, and I have never really given any details about what I am going to be doing when I get there. I promise I am not trying to hold out on you, it’s just that Katy and I have been trying to figure that out ourselves. Well I am happy to announce that we have a pretty solid plan in place. We cycled through a few different ideas during the planning phase. We knew we had to live and work above the Tropic of Capricorn for at least the first 3 months in order to qualify for our second year visa and figured, why not get that out of the way right at the beginning. Katy is not completely set on staying 2 years, but I am sure that once she gets used to the traveling lifestyle, she won’t have any interest in going back to her normal life. I give it… 19 days before she commits to staying for 2 years. Please leave your bets in the comments below. Anyway, we decided that we were either going to live in Darwin or Cairns. I have friends who have lived in both places, so we had some first-hand pros and cons for each.

Pros Darwin:

High wages

Less touristy

Relaxed lifestyle

Pros Cairns:

Great Barrier Reef

Backpacker haven

Bigger city

We ended up deciding that Darwin was going to be where we would set up our home base. The decision really came down to the fact that we are older than your typical backpacker (26 and 25) and we just can’t hang with the 18-22 year olds anymore. Our livers will thank us for finally realizing this. I feel like we will get a more authentic Australian experience in Darwin as well. Plus the fact that it is only an hour flight to Bali doesn’t hurt. My heart is still in Asia.

We are hoping to find a workaway opportunity in Darwin for the first few weeks so we can get our feet wet, decide if we like the city, and try to find a job before we have to start paying rent on a flat. So, if you know of anything, please let me know! As far a jobs go, we are looking for something in hospitality, as that is a requirement to qualify for the second year visa if you don’t want to do farm work (we don’t). I had my mind set on being a bartender, but Katy and I both have experience as baristas as well and I definitely am more of a morning person, so that may be a better route to go. I guess only time will tell!

Welp, now you know our plan! Before any of that happens though,  we will be spending a week exploring Sydney. I will post our itinerary for that little sightseeing trip tomorrow.
