Day 9 | My Favorite Country… So Far

One of the questions that I get asked on a daily basis is “what is your favorite country that you’ve visited?” It is such a hard question for me because I have loved almost every place I have visited for different reasons. I often compare that question to someone asking a parent which of their children is their favorite. I have visited 18 countries so far and far more cities than I care to count. Below, I am going to share with y’all my top 5 favorites, and the reasons why I love them so much.

5. Canada

favorite country

I don’t know why more people don’t add Canada to the myriad of best travel locations lists. I have only had the opportunity to visit Western Canada so far, but I have aspirations to dedicate a LOT more time to this vast nation. I’m looking at you Montreal, Toronto, and Nova Scotia.

4. Israel

Favorite country

My experience in Israel was different than most because I was not there on my own. I visited with a tour group composed of 30+ people with Jewish heritage. Not only did that add to the experience of being in Israel, but it also allowed me to connect with my roots, meet some of my best friends, and it was a culinary tour, so my foodie heart left very happy.

3. Belgium

Favorite country

I feel like Belgium is a country that is really hit or miss with people. Every other article I read about Belgium is about how someone hated Brussels, that they felt like it was cold and uninviting. However, my experience in Belgium, and specifically Brussels was the exact opposite. I spent 6 days here in 2015 and it quickly became my favorite country in Europe. How could I not love a country that is know for their beer, fries, chocolate, and waffles?

2. The Philippines

Favorite country

The hardest part of this list was trying to decided whether I was going to list the Philippines at number 1 or 2. In the end, it came down to the food. I just wasn’t won over by Filipino food, however, do not let that detract from the incredible beauty and the amazingly friendly people. Having over 6000 islands to visit doesn’t hurt either. If you get bored of island hopping, head to Luzon and go canyoneering, hiking through the mountains, or chasing waterfalls. There is something for everyone in this beautiful island nation.

1. Thailand

Favorite country

And the winner is…. THAILAND. This country literally has everything I could ever want. The north is filled with amazing hiking opportunities. The south is surrounded by an overwhelming amount of islands that offer peace, tranquility, white sand beaches, and delicious coconuts. I had the best meal of my life in Chiang Mai, and spent a few days relaxing on an essentially deserted island in Koh Kradan. I rode motorbikes in Krabi, and lived a hippy lifestyle in Pai. I climbed in some of the best crags in the world in Tonsai, and I got scuba certified in a national marine park in Koh Lipe. Thailand, you are it for me.

What is your favorite country you have visited? Is it on my list? If not, convince me why it should be!
